Aaron Nelsen,
Apple
Apple just dropped version 3.1.1 of Safari, as well as version 1.5.1 of the Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update.
As always details about what these updates actually do is scarce:
This update is recommend for all Safari users and includes improvements to stability, compatibility and security.
This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of MacBook Pro computers.
After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be:
MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07
You can confirm the version of the Boot ROM installed on your computer using System Profiler.

Remember kids, tomorrow Apple is set to release its Q2 earnings after market close. While their earnings should be impressive and likely beat the market expectations of $1.11 per share, it’s the Q3 guidance people will really be focused on. As we’ve seen in the past an overly conservative outlook can destroy investor confidence in a hurry (see Apples Q2 outlook as reported with their Q1 earnings), almost as much as missing a quarters projected EPS.
With the economy in a slow down Apple’s pricey computers and accessories may not be as likely to move, which is a point thats been raised over and over by analysts. It should be noted that some believe that Apple’s high prices make it recession proof, purely from the standpoint that they can drop the price per computer by $300 and still make a handsome profit. Apple dropping their prices‚Ķ Yeah, that’s likely to happen (please pay attention to the dripping sarcasm there).
However, the impending launch of the 3G iPhone coupled with the expanding availability of the iPhone in other countries should do nicely for offsetting any slow down in computer sales. Although since investors tend to act like a bunch of girls, they may see a decrease in computer sales as bad news and run scared.
Let’s try and focus on Apple as a whole, not just their computer division‚Ķ Mm’kay? After all, they did drop the Computers from the name, remember?
In the interest of full disclosure, I own shares in Apple Inc. so I might be biased, yeah, maybe a little.
p.s. Remind me to sell when Apple hits $200

Eee PC
You heard right, the big brother of the current Eee model is hitting stores May 12th. Not only will it feature a larger screen, but it will also be available in both Windows XP and Linux flavors for the price of $549.
How does that work you ask? One has a free OS and the other Windows, but they cost the same?! Outrageous! Actually not really, turns out if you opt for Linux you’ll be getting rewarded in the form of a 20GB SSD as opposed to the 12GB SSD with the Windows model.
Storage space aside, both options have the same specs: 8.9-in. screen, 1GB of system memory, a 1.3-megapixel camera and a multi-touch trackpad.

Fanboys and fangirls alike can rejoice, Apple made up for their terrible sins and replaced the entire top half of my computer! No joke, I just wanted them to repair the bevel around the screen‚Ķ but they were like “you know what, so the repair goes faster, let’s replace the whole top”. Awesome!
Like I mentioned before, I dropped my Macbook Pro off Thursday, they called me at 10am Friday morning to inform me the repairs were complete, that was crazy fast. I now have my computer back, and all is right in the world. They did a fantastic job correcting their mistake, sure it sucks that they messed up in the first place, but at least they were prompt in offering a solution.  Kudos to them.

I dropped my Macbook Pro¬† off at the Apple Store yesterday around 4pm, the Genius who was working told me that it would probably be ready some time today. Which means another trip to Omaha… this is getting kind of old.
The one nice thing about taking it in to the store is that I’ll be able to inspect it for damage right then and there. Hopefully this will be the last of it though.

Apple,
Software,
iPhone,
iPod touch
As my fellow blogger Fred has recently pointed out, we have a new reviews section and rating system for mobile applications for the iPhone/iPod touch. In honor of that, I decided I’d post a quick top ten list of the best apps in my opinion for the iPhone (this list only includes apps that I currently have installed).
- Installer.app - I know it’s a cop out, but without it installing apps is rather frustrating.
- Fring - Support for VoIP, GoogleTalk, Twitter, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and ICQ.
- Touchpad - Awesome app for controlling your computer from across the room.
- iPhysics - Countless hours of fun
- Tris - The most polished version of Tetris available for the iPhone.
- MxTube - Easy to use application for downloading and saving YouTube videos.
- NES - Super Mario Bros on the iPhone, ’nuff said.
- Millionaire - Without Regis Philbin it’s a much better game.
- Pool - Excellent use of the touch screen for controls.
- AFPd - Makes copying files to and from your iPhone a breeze (assuming you’re on a Mac).
What’s your top ten list of apps look like?

Someone recently asked me if I knew of a free Usenet newsreader for Mac OS X, I do in fact. Pineapple News 0.9, it’s free and lightweight. Check it out if you’re in need of one.
From MacUpdate:
Pineapple News is a USENET newsreader for Mac OS X. It is primarily an offline reader, but it has features and user interface conventions that make it easy to use online also. As you can see, it uses the traditional three-pane paradigm. Pineapple News can decode binary attachments in several formats: yenc, uuencode, MIME base64, and MIME inline. If an attachment is spread across two or more message files, it will automatically search through all downloaded messages in the current newsgroup, find the necessary parts, and stitch them back together. Currently, the program can’t deal with RARs, PARs, or NZB files, but I’ll likely add support for them, if there is enough interest.

Even if Apple contracts out to idiots who destroy your computer and hires customer service reps who tell you to bug off, they do end up making up for it. Eventually.
I went to the Apple Store yesterday and with almost no hassle at all they replaced the battery right then and there, they also ordered all the replacement parts they’ll need to get my Macbook Pro back up to snuff. Those should be in tomorrow, then I’ll only have to go 24-48 hours without my computer while they repair it.
Sweet.
