Wormux

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on May 27, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, Games, OS X

I don’t know if any of you have played any of team17’s Worms series, but they’re awesome.

Anyhow, Wormux is an open source equivalent available for OS X (as well as Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, and also available in a bootable livecd form), you should seriously consider checking it out.

[ Download it here ]

I’m hoping either team17 or the developers of Wormux come out with an iPhone version after the SDK launches. That would be fantastic.

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on May 16, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, OS X, Tips

[13] defaults write com.apple.finder _FXShowPosixPathInTitle -bool YES Terminal.app
This command lets you see the current path of the Finder window you are in. Quite handy if you’re working with a ton of finder windows.

[14] defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem -bool YES
Enables Quit in Finder. killall Finder command is required to take effect.

[15] telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl
Using a simple telnet address your Terminal will connect and play Star Wars Episode IV in its ASCII glory.

[10] defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YESTerminal.app
Leopard only. Replaces the 3D dock with a 2D one. Requires killall Dock to take effect.

[11] defaults write -g NSNavPanelExpandedStateForSaveMode -bool TRUE
This sets the save dialogue to the expanded view as default. Requires restart. Replace TRUE with FALSE to disable.

[12] sudo chmod 0 /System/Library/CoreServices/Spotlight.app
This command removes the spotlight icon from your menu bar. Type 755 instead of 0 to re-enable it. Requires killall Spotlight command to take effect.

Terminal Tips: Part 3

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on May 14, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, OS X, Tips

Yay! More terminal commands!Terminal.app

[7] whois
It’s a handy way to quickly track down registration/contact information about domain ownership. Simply enter whois domainnamehere.com.

[8] defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
If you use the screen shot function, you may at times want to change the format it stores the images in. Where jpg is in the code you can change it to whatever format you want, png, bmp, gif, etc. You will need to restart for the changes to take effect.

[9] defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'
This command creates a new stack in your dock so you can view recently used Applications. A quick killall Dock command is required for the change to take effect.

Terminal Tips: Part 2

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on May 13, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, OS X, Tips

Continuing from where my last post left off, here are a few more Terminal commands.Terminal.app

[4] defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
Deactivates Dashboard. Requires the dock to be relaunched to take effect, so remember to type killall Dock and press enter. Replace YES with NO to enable again.

[5]  say ______
Not very useful, but kinda fun. Typing say followed by whatever you want, results in your computer speaking the inputted text to you.

[6] ifconfig
Shows you all sorts of useful information about your network connection, including IP and MAC address. You can even access connection specific information by adding en0 (ethernet card), or en1 (airport) to the end (ie. ipconfig en1). Or if you’d like to disable a connection, try something like ifconfig en1 down (replacing down with up will bring the connection back online).

Hitman: Contracts Cheats (OS X)

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on May 13, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, Cheats, OS X, Video Games

I don’t know if anyone still plays this game, I just downloaded it because I was bored last week. And since I really suck at video games I occasionally (read: all the time) turn to cheat codes.

There are tons of cheats available for the Windows version of Hitman: Contracts, but no where could I find any for the OS X version. Well, as it turns out it’s a Cider port, so it technically includes all the Windows files and by association the cheats. The problem is you can’t directly edit HitmanContracts.ini to enable the cheats like in the Windows version‚Ķ or can you?

Answer is after the jump. Read more…

Terminal Tips: Part 1

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on May 12, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, OS X, Tips

Terminal is a fantastic way to customize random little settings in OS X, but it’s hard for new Mac users to know what commands do what. So over the next few days I’ll be posting random Terminal commands that I’ve found useful.Terminal.app

[1] defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
This will allow you to drag widgets out of Dashboard and onto the desktop. In order for it to take effect, the dock to be relaunched, so next you’ll type killall Dock and press enter. Now, if you click and hold on a widget in the dashboard and press F12 to return to the desktop, the widget won’t disappear with the rest. To reverse, change YES to NO.

[2] defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType none
Disables the application unexpectedly quit dialog that usually appears when an application crashes. Replace none with prompt to enable again.

[3] defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Shows hidden files in the finder. Replace TRUE with FALSE to hide hidden files again.

equinux releases TubeStick hybrid

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on May 4, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, New Products, OS X, Technology, equinux

On May 1st, equinux released their new TubeStick hybrid for the modest price of $129. The TubeStick hybrid is a new TV receiver for the Mac, designed exclusively for North America. It features two receivers: One to watch digital over-the-air HDTV broadcasts and one for digital HDTV (QAM) cable or regular analog cable TV.

It’s a pretty sweet piece of hardware, that actually makes me wish I watched TV, just so I could buy one.

$129 (with free shipping) will get you the following…

  • USB 2.0 Stick for ATSC, Analog and Cable TV
  • TV Software “The Tube 2″
  • Printed quick start guide
  • Extensive PDF manual
  • Antenna with magnetic base
  • External antenna adapter
  • Break-out Cable (S-Video; Composite)
  • USB extension cable

The TV software “The Tube 2″ seems pretty robust, offering a timeshift buffer that allows users to go back and record a show from the moment they started watching it. It also includes automatic synchronization with iTunes, so as soon as you stop a recording it converts it to your preset format and adds it to your iTunes library.

Another great feature is their free TubeToGo service, it allows you to upload clips to a web gallery and view them on your iPhone, iPod touch, or another computer. It also includes the ability to add, remove and even schedule recordings.

Turns out the TubeStick also ships with a Windows driver, and works with Windows Media Center. Not bad at all.

OQO 02 Hacked to Run OS X

Posted by Aaron Nelsen on Apr 29, 2008 in Aaron Nelsen, Apple, OQO, OS X

There have been a series of ultra portable computers that have been graced with some sweet Leopard action, thanks to some ingenious tinkering, including the Eee PC and the Samsung Q1 Ultra, now you can add OQO’s 02 to the list. This seems to be one of the more complete installs out there, WiFi, sound, power management and Bluetooth all seem to be working.

OQO 02

While the OQO is a little clunky, it’s still a pretty sweet proof of concept. I’m definitely looking forward to the release of the full instructions on how to get it running, even though I don’t own a OQO.

oqotalk.com member trf has posted a short video demoing the OQO running Leopard, check it out after the jump.
